Resources

I'm currently querying and saving information over at Ancestry.com and I'm more impressed with them than any other site I've seen so far.

Genealogy.com is my second favorite because they have a lot of datasets you can subscribe to and/or order on CD. The downside is that you don't know the quality/detail of the data until you after you buy the subscription or the CD and most of the datasets don't come with your original subscription so you end up getting nickel and dimed for extra resources to search and usually, of course, you don't find what you're looking for. This site would be more useful for people who are professional researchers querying a bunch of different family lines.

GenCircles, on the other hand, used to be a relatively good site but it appears they're losing customers/money now since a) they offer no tech support except for FAQ and b) they've closed off all additional clubs and postings to their site. I definitely don't recommend this one.

The Butler Society is an organization headquartered in Kilkenny, Ireland and has a lot of info and contacts if you're researching the Butler family name. The downside is that a lot of their information is in print-only format and you have to order with cash or check by mail. Also, the members-only section of their site requires a subscription fee that you must pay by cash or check.

Thomas Butler and His Descendants. A Genealogy of the Descendants of Thomas and Elizabeth Butler of Butler's Hill, South Berwick, Maine, 1674 to 1886. George H. Butler. (1886)

This book is also available on CD (scans in pdf format, unsearchable) for just $11.00 plus shipping from Quintin Publications (item B188). The printout costs $22.00, which is as cheap as you're ever going to find it.
